"Deciphering T-TIP: The Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership - A “new generation” of international trade deals?" Date: Friday, March 11th, 2016. Venue: Room 3105, Arts Block, Trinity College Time: 10am-12:30pm; 1:00-3:30pm Evening discussion 6-8pm (venue tba) Dear colleagues, During this interregnum between the election of a new Dáil and the establishment of the next Government, we invite you to a colloquium on the TTIP (Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership) currently under negotiation between the European Commission and the US Department of Commerce: a key component of the infrastructure of an emerging transnational matrix of power & global governance. Interregnum - from inter (between) and regis (king) – etymologically signifies the liminal period between the death of one sovereign and the enthronement of another; a period of danger, but also of opportunity. While we are distracted by the drama in our local & immediate theatre of power, one of the dangers is that new powers are ascendant, off-scene and globally. Such is the case with TTIP. Many analysts cite precedent in other ‘bilateral trade deals’ to argue that that TTIP will afford global corporations a cautionary grip and chill-factor on national sovereign legislatures’ constitutional powers to enact parliamentary laws or sign off on regulatory instruments – even those governing ‘public services’ such as education, social care or public health – lest these may threaten the bottom line of said ‘investors’. But as an interruption of a prevailing consensus on the direction of policy & law, an interregnum is also an opportunity to pause, to reflect and to form new understandings of how we wish to be governed. As we approach the centenary of the atavistic, yet vitally progressive and inclusive Proclamation of the Irish Republic - which declared “the unfettered control of Irish destinies to be sovereign & indefeasible” - we find ourselves at the threshold of ceding sovereignty to extra-territorial corporate governance. We invite you to be part of this discussion. Respectfully yours, Kieran Keohane Mic Moroney See attached documents below for more details
