SAI Postgraduate Conference 2020
In February we gathered for the Annual SAI Postgraduate Conference. Our theme was 'Approaching the Edge', which seemed appropriate for our delegates approaching the start of new beginnings, and the beginning of the end of their postgraduate research, as well as indicating the critical societal challenges that the research of the conference participants addressed. It was doubly appropriate as an enormous storm came in from the Atlantic and made us feel very much that we were on the edge of the world. An enormous thanks goes to the SAI Postgraduate Officer Ann Burke who shouldered most of the burden of organising and made it a fantastic event. Katherine Powell of Sociology in NUIG was also phenomenally helpful and welcoming. Ann Byrne of NUIG gave the closing keynote on the 'Gift of Sociology', explaining how it offers the gift of a different way of seeing and connecting that can contribute to human flourishing. Lucy Michael of Lucy Michael Training and Consultancy gave an extremely useful talk on careers in sociology outside of academia. Matthew Creighton, the editor in chief of the Irish Journal of Sociology demystified the editorial process of peer review publications. Finally, Zoe O'Reilly fired our imaginations with a workshop on creative methods in social research. Twenty postgraduate students presented papers on their research, in what was overall, a really stimulating and enjoyable event.
