Solidarity statement condemning the invasion of UKRAINE
The Sociological Association of Ireland condemns the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation and the terrible violence that is being inflicted as a result of this. Peace, dialogue, justice, self-determination and respect for human life are fundamental values, which have been attacked in this war. Our deep wish is for peace to prevail. We wish to express our solidarity with our Ukrainian colleagues in the Institute of Sociology NAS, Ukraine and the European Sociological Association, and sympathy with those in Russia who have been involved in and implicated in a war against their will and desire.
As a very humble expression of solidarity the SAI has made a contribution to the Ukraine Crisis Appeal of the Irish Red Cross. We encourage our membership to consider also consider making private contributions to help support the people suffering in Ukraine. A private contribution can be made through this link: donate.redcross.ie
The conference fee for the SAI Annual Conference is also being waived for scholars displaced by the War in Ukraine, and financial support is being offered to other displaced scholars to facilitate conference participation. For more details please contact sociology.ie@gmail.com.

This mentoring scheme of the Sociological Association of Ireland (SAI) offers training, support and development to sociology PhD graduates and early career researchers who think they could benefit from enhanced engagement with an established academic with regards to career development and job seeking. It is targeted especially at less experienced academics who may require advice about CPD, professional training, publishing and funding opportunities but who may not have strong professional relationships with university departments or with established academics.

THANKS TO ALL FOR A FASCINATING AND IMPACTFUL SAI ANNUAL CONFERENCE, ON THE 7TH & 8TH MAY

The SAI Annual Conference took place on May 7th and 8th. Thanks to all participants keynotes and helpers. The organising committee were delighted with the outcome after months of hard work. It is the presenters who make it work though, and we would like to heartily thank everyone who presented, and who submitted a paper (we were disappointed we could not accommodate many excellent papers). Preparations are already underway for SAI 2022, and we will be updating members shortly about that.
What else is going on?
As the new academic year rolls around, the SAI Committee are in the process of making plans for 2020-1. It is going to be an unusual and challenging year again, but we are determined to do what we can to maintain a vibrant sociological community of scholars and researchers. The past year has shown that the voice of sociology is more needed than ever. We have more ideas in the pipeline, but some things are for sure...

- Queens University Belfast and Ulster University will be taking over the editorship of the Irish Journal of Sociology. This represents an exciting new era for the journal, following on from the excellent stewardship of UCD.
- There are seven SAI Study Groups, with more information about these under our 'Events' page. These cover a wide range of interests, and are an excellent way to develop your specialism and find a community.
- If you would like more information about any of the above, please get in touch at sociology.ie@gmail.com

A Message to Sociologists, Social Researchers and SAI Members
Sociology and social research in general plays a vital role in Irish society by producing the knowledge that gives us the opportunity to act wisely by giving us maps of the social, which we hope will lead to a better society, better politics, better thinking and better policies. The SAI, as the professional association of sociology in Ireland, is committed to supporting the discipline through fora for them to share ideas, collaborate and disseminate their research. Its strength is its members and their willingness to participate and support the discipline. The Committee give their time for free, and SAI members around the country and internationally build community and critical mass in research areas through their passion in forging networks, organising events, writing and research, editing and peer reviewing, and teaching. The strength and vibrancy of the discipline is based on the input of each member. We hope that you will consider pitching in through joining the SAI and participating in the wider community.
