What else is going on?
As the new academic year rolls around, the SAI Committee are in the process of making plans for 2020-1. It is going to be an unusual and challenging year again, but we are determined to do what we can to maintain a vibrant sociological community of scholars and researchers. The past year has shown that the voice of sociology is more needed than ever. We have more ideas in the pipeline, but some things are for sure...

- Queens University Belfast and Ulster University will be taking over the editorship of the Irish Journal of Sociology. This represents an exciting new era for the journal, following on from the excellent stewardship of UCD.
- There are seven SAI Study Groups, with more information about these under our 'Events' page. These cover a wide range of interests, and are an excellent way to develop your specialism and find a community.
- If you would like more information about any of the above, please get in touch at sociology.ie@gmail.com
Launch of the Young Sociologist of the Year Prize
Our big news for December is the launch of the Young Sociologist of the Year Prize. The SAI and School of Sociology in UCD are partnering in this. We want to help promote sociology in schools and to give recognition to the amazing work that students and teachers do in their Politics and Society, and Sociology classes. Please spread the word to any schools, teachers and students you think would be interested.

A Message to Sociologists, Social Researchers and SAI Members
Sociology and social research in general plays a vital role in Irish society by producing the knowledge that gives us the opportunity to act wisely by giving us maps of the social, which we hope will lead to a better society, better politics, better thinking and better policies. The SAI, as the professional association of sociology in Ireland, is committed to supporting the discipline through fora for them to share ideas, collaborate and disseminate their research. Its strength is its members and their willingness to participate and support the discipline. The Committee give their time for free, and SAI members around the country and internationally build community and critical mass in research areas through their passion in forging networks, organising events, writing and research, editing and peer reviewing, and teaching. The strength and vibrancy of the discipline is based on the input of each member. We hope that you will consider pitching in through joining the SAI and participating in the wider community.

New Appointments to the SAI Executive for 2020
The SAI is delighted to announce the appointment of several new members of the SAI Executive Committee, bringing a nice injection of new energy. Recently, at the 2020 SAI AGM, Lisa Moran joined the committee in the role of Second-Level Sociology Officer, Ciara Bradley will be taking over as Treasurer, and Egle Gusciute is joining the Committee as an Ordinary Member. The SAI Committee and community at large would like to extend great thanks and warm wishes to the outgoing members of the committee - Ann Burke, Mark Doyle, Carmel Hannan, Kieran Keohane and Jill O'Mahony who gave tremendous service in their respective roles, and did enormous work to benefit the discipline in Ireland.
