Irish Journal of Sociology

The Irish Journal of Sociology is the peer-reviewed journal of the Sociological Association of Ireland (SAI). Founded in 1991, it aims to publish original high quality articles of interest to an international sociological audience while also remaining a forum for material that is directly engaged with Irish society. Over the last two decades, the IJS has carved out a distinctive space in the field of sociological inquiry and continues to show a fundamental commitment to empirical research and theoretically informed work with an innovative edge.

The journal welcomes articles which make a contribution to theoretical and empirical research on topics of contemporary interest, such as democracy, citizenship, globalization, gender, class, religion, media, crime, ethnicity, migration, family, sexualities, development, health, community, environment, knowledge, identity, social movements, and various processes of social change.

Proposals for special issue editions are also welcomed by the editors. Contributors are expected to comply with the submission guidelines for both general papers and special issue proposals outlined on www.ijs-guidelines.sociology.ie

The journal is currently hosted by the Department of Sociology at University College Cork, National University of Ireland, Cork.

Launch of the Irish Journal of Sociology

The Irish Journal of Sociology was relaunched on the 10th of June 2010, to mark the journal’s publishing contract with Manchester University Press (MUP) and the publication of 2 new issues,  by Manchester University Press, volume 17/1 and volume 17/2 (a special issue on Health).

Below is an extract from the comments of the President of UCC Dr. Michael Murphy who launched the journal.“ This event is organised to acknowledge the fact that the Irish Journal of Sociology, the house journal of the Sociological Association of Ireland, has now secured a publishing contract with Manchester University Press, a prominent international publisher which will guarantee the journal access to an global audience and access to what is now a key requirement of a serious academic journal if it wishes to have any impact namely on line access. This will be assured by the deal with Manchester and will lead to the journal being abstracted in all of the significant social science data bases. One of the reasons why this is important and worthy of mention is that  it is the culmination of a long process through which the Sociological Association of Ireland – the professional body that represents sociologists in Ireland – has sought to give its journal the kind of publishing prominence that it deserves. The journal is committed to publishing high quality articles of interest to the global community of sociologists while in recognition of its status as an Irish journal it also strives to be an important forum for academics to publish material on Irish society. Its capacity to fulfil this kind of mission statement is enhanced by securing an international publisher. In this way it is a significant milestone in the history of the organisation.

The editorial team is– Dr. Linda Connolly, Dr. Kathy Glavanis, Dr. Niamh Hourigan, Dr. Tracey Skillington, Paula Meany and Afric O’Grada. The Editorial Board is composed largely of other members of the department with a suitably impressive list of eminent European sociologists”.
